PGTS Manual Use and Revision

Legacy Insights- From the Director's Desk October 27, 2021

Over the last three years, committees have been revising the NAD Planned Giving & Trust Services (PGTS) Working Policy (WP) and the NAD PGTS Standards. This work was completed in April 2021, when the NAD PGTS Standing Committee approved the revised PGTS Standards. Since the WP and the Standards have changed, the next item needing revision is the NAD PGTS Manual. This process will begin in fall 2021. It will take close to two years to complete the Manual revision process and have the results voted by the Standing Committee in spring 2024.

Manual Uses

The PGTS Manual serves the following functions: an educational tool used as a textbook for the NAD PGTS Certification Course, a reference for PGTS personnel as they are working in their offices, and a resource to pull together into one volume the policies, standards, and guidelines specific to PGTS. While preserving these functions during the revision process, we intend to make the manual more practical and relevant to your work with donors as well as your office.

All PGTS certified personnel will be asked to complete a survey concerning how they currently use the manual and what changes they would like to be implemented. Your input through this survey will be essential to the revision committee’s work and will help guide them to make the manual more relevant to everyone in the field.

Revision of the Manual

Each chapter of the manual will be reviewed, and any material that is no longer relevant will be removed. Any content that needs to be revised because of the changes to WP and Standards will be updated. And all applications, forms, and checklists will be reviewed and updated. New material will be added based on the results of the survey and the committee’s discretion. Once the committee has prepared a recommended draft, it will then be presented to the NAD PGTS Standing Committee for review and final approval.

You can access the current manual on the staff.willplan.org website.
